John Lyons Portraits
In portraiture, I attempt to express what is behind and beyond the physical features of the sitter.
I enjoy the challenge of painting/drawing portraits, commissioned or otherwise. My aim is always to capture not a superficial resemblance of the sitter but that other distinguishing thing that lies behind the eyes, the bone structure underlying the features, and the body’s natural posture.
A painted portrait, as an image imbued with the painter’s artistic sensibility and skill, expresses so much more than a photograph.
